BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book

http://www.linux.com/feed/119574 (20071002 19:00)

This book comes to me in an unusual way. I received an email from the publisher and editor asking if I'd be willing to review BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book. Ok, that's not unusual. In fact, it happens to me all the time. What is unusual is that I'd never heard of Reed Media Services before. One reason is that they seem to be a smaller publishing house that was originally started to "print newsletter publishing, online publishing (including related software design), and providing related internet hosting services". The other reason is that they've only produced two books thus far (The OpenBSD PF Packet Filter Book is the other one).

DataCore UpTempo Software Boosts Performance for Microsoft SQL, Exchange, Databases, Server Virtualization, Citrix, Oracle, SAP, VMware, VDI and Disk I/O Intensive Applications

http://prweb.com/releases/2007/10/prweb557096.htm (20071002 08:40)

UpTempo dramatically speeds up applications by making the computer system read and write data to its disk drives more efficiently. It does this by overcoming today's biggest performance barrier - data input/output (I/O) bottlenecks resulting from slow, mechanical, disk accesses - the most common cause of server and desktop application underperformance. Trial software is available for download at www.datacore.com/download.asp. Download UpTempo and take a free test drive; mileage may vary, however, the software can speed up I/O performance by a factor of 3 to 4x (and sometimes 10x or more). VM-Based Rootkits Proved Easily Detectable

http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/164128398/article.pl (20071002 07:35)

paleshadows writes "A year and a half has passed since SubVirt, the first VMM (virtual machine monitor) based rootkit, was introduced (PDF), covered in the tech press, and discussed here. Later Joanna Rutkowska made news by claiming she had a VMM-based attack on Vista that was undetectable — a claim that was roundly challenged. Now in this year's HotOS workshop, researchers from Stanford, CMU, VMware, and XenSource have published a paper titled Compatibility Is Not Transparency: VMM Detection Myths and Realities (PDF) showing that VMM-based rootkits are actually easily detectable."
