The world is changing and online applications are becoming more and more popular, whether for e-mail or word processing. Ubuntu Disappoints, Breaks Promises With Rapid Growth

http://www.linux.com/feed/119530 (20070930 21:33)

It's been a wild ride, but I have definitely not regretted my choice to make Ubuntu a major part of my life. As a full-time user, I have been charged by Windows and Linux user alike for not following their own lemming-like mindsets. And this has bothered me for some time now. Today, I hope to clear the air with everyone, even though you will never get through to the most hardcore users of both platforms. Let's get started.

Microsoft launch anti-linux campaign worthy of a politician

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Microsoft_launch_anti_linux_campaign_worthy_of_a_politician (20070930 18:20)

Microsoft's latest affront to the Linux community is their "STATE GOVERNMENT SAYS LINUX WAS TOO BIG A RISK" campaign, and I'm sick of them ad-spamming Linux related articles with this piece of garbage. The Linux Scorecard blog digs a bit deeper and discusses the claim, and the man who originally made it.

http://osnews.com/story.php/18704/Code-Analysis-of-Linux-Wireless-Teams-ath5k-Driver/ (20070930 14:40)

SFLC has released a code analysis of the infamous ath5k driver in Linux. SFLC has also - in the aftermath of the OpenBSD-Team vs. Linux-Team 'License Flame War' - released a paper on what 'copyrightable' means, as well as one on proper usage of non-GPL'ed code in GPL'ed projects. All as part of guidance for developers wishing to use permissive licensed code in GPL'ed projects. Groklaw naturally also has a take on this.

Sysfs Stability

http://lxer.com/module/newswire/ext_link.php?rid=93446 (20070930 10:33)

"The fact that we continue to expose internal data structures via sysfs is a gaping open pit [and] is far more likely to cause any kind of problems than changing an error return," Theodore Ts'o noted, responding to a thread discussing a patch to fix an error return code. Andrew Morton agreed, "I was staring in astonishment at the pending sysfs patch pile last night. Forty syfs patches and twenty-odd patches against driver core and the kobject layer." He continued, "that's a huge amount of churn for a core piece of kernel infrastructure which has been there for four or five years. Not a good sign." Andrew then added a humorous quip, "I mean, it's not as if, say, the CPU scheduler guys keep on rewriting all their junk. oh, wait.."

http://www.linux.com/feed/119527 (20070930 10:25)

Learn how to install and configure BlockHosts on a Debian Etch system. BlockHosts is a Python tool that observes login attempts to various services, e.g. SSH, FTP, etc., and if it finds failed login attempts again and again from the same IP address or host, it stops further login attempts from that IP address/host.
