Enterprises continue to adopt web technologies and 'web 2.0' trends, but there are two common threads to this adoption. One is that web technologies are step-by-step being adopted by enterprises, but they aren't yet ready to usurp many desktop software apps. The Google Apps vs Microsoft Office debate currently raging is proof of that.

Today, Sept. 17, Linux turns 16 -- old enough to drive in some states, not to mention that in some Southern states, Linux is old enough to marry its cousin. Want to sign a card to Linus and the rest of those who made the operating system what it is today, or tell us how you got started with Linux? Getnix.com has a card to send the principals ready for you to fill out.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has announced two standards aimed at bringing order to the web. In early September W3C introduced Web Services Policy 1.5, giving developers a way to connect web services standards such as SOAP 1.2, WSDL 2.0, and XML Schema to new Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based applications. And last week it gave a boost to what W3C calls the "semantic web" with the long-awaited announcement of the standard for Gleaning Resource Descriptions from Dialects of Languages (GRDDL).

In conjunction with Software Freedom Day, the Free and Open Source Software Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) has made a call for governments to purchase hardware that will not limit its choice of what software to run. The foundation, which promotes the use of free software and open source methods within Africa, said that during all the debates about FLOSS (free, libre and open source software) it was often forgotten that in many cases the hardware was locked into some proprietary operating system. The use of non-restricted hardware would benefit both governments and citizens, it argued.

As Apple Computer (AAPL) surpasses the one million iPhones sold mark and Wall Street has to some degree sold the "news" about the iPhone, not to mention getting lost in the mortgage morass, Apple still remains one of the strongest stocks in the market and should for some time to come. I have been saying this to everyone who'd listen for a lot longer than the Street has been buying up Apple's shares, and I think this market correction is just another great buying opportunity. Apple proved with the iPhone's comprehensive and extremely clever communications UI and with their interactive pixels technology that they are simply the leader in UIs and product design. Many manufacturers and Linux developers are nipping at their heels though, and the question is how many more tricks Apple has up their sleeves.

At a mere 50MB, Damn Small Linux (DSL) seems like it would be more at home in the realm of rescue disks instead of Desktop OSs. After booting up into full graphical mode, you may be hooked on this tiny distribution forever. I am impressed with the number of applications and the fact that DSL has two choices for graphical interfaces (Window Managers): Fluxbox and jwm (see Figures 1 and 2). DSL is based on the Debian Linux distribution.

Sunnz writes "The leaner, lighter, faster, and most importantly, BSD Licensed, Compiler PCC has been imported into OpenBSD's CVS and NetBSD's pkgsrc. The compiler is based on the original Portable C Compiler by S. C. Johnson, written in the late 70's. Even though much of the compiler has been rewritten, some of the basics still remain. It is currently not bug-free, but it compiles on x86 platform, and work is being done on it to take on GCC's job."

alphadogg writes "For a decade, IPv6 proponents have pushed this upgrade to the Internet's main communications protocol because of its three primary benefits: a gargantuan address space, end-to-end security, and easier network administration through automatic device configuration. Now it turns out that one of these IPv6 benefits — autoconfiguration — may not be such a boon for corporate network managers. A growing number of IPv6 experts say that corporations probably will skip autoconfiguration and instead stick with DHCP, which has been updated to support IPv6."
